Our Letter to Our Governor

Dear Governor Rauner:
Our names are Dean Farwell, Drew Minas, and Jared Abbott and we are Seniors at Orion High School in Orion, Illinois. We are expressing our concerns towards genetic engineering within plants and humans.
We are aware that you have likely not heard a lot about the issues and benefits of genetic engineering. Although somewhat regulated, we believe the field could greatly benefit through certain restrictions and reallocations of funds. This could allow for a growth within GMOs in agriculture and decrease the chance of superhumans, eco-social splits, and god complexes within the scientists.
We, as Illinois citizens, need to make a change in how we address genetic engineering. The United States Government should pass a budget or bill requiring scientific installations to minimize the amount of genetic engineering performed on humans and increase research of the field within agriculture. By limiting genetic engineering within humans, we can prevent a multitude of issues. Superhumans could cause an issue as certain people would be stronger and smarter than average humans, which could be weaponized. Furthermore, this could create an eco-social split as a gene editing procedure is expensive. This means that the rich would be biologically superior, which could lead to an even larger split economically. Finally, genetic engineering within humans could create a god complex in a scientist. This would be because the scientist feels they are like a god as they were able to create or edit human life. All these issues could be avoided with restrictions. By sending extra funding to genetic engineering within agriculture, we could create a larger amount of food, in a much more productive environment.
Thank you for taking the time to read our letter and take our ideas into consideration. We hope the United States Government will move forward with genetic engineering regulations and increased funding.
Sincerely,
Dean Farwell, Drew Minas, and Jared Abbott
